MedStar Health Administrative Residency in Innovation & Emergency Medicine

The MedStar Health Administrative Residency in Innovation & Emergency Medicine is a unique program in partnership with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health that offers their 2nd year Master of Health Administration (MHA) students field placement experience within MedStar Institute for Innovation (MI2) and MedStar Emergency Physicians (MEP).

  • MedStar Institute for Innovation (MI2)

    Chartered in 2009, the mission of MI2 is to catalyze innovation that advances health; its mantra is “Think Differently.”  MI2’s scope of activities includes initiatives in learning and simulation, telehealth and digital/consumer health, entrepreneurship, technology commercialization, SMART on FHIR adoption and utilization, data science, pharmacogenomics, surgical innovation, and more.   • MedStar Emergency Physicians (MEP)

    MEP oversees and manages the daily operations of eight MedStar Health emergency departments, including MedStar Washington Hospital Center, MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center, MedStar Harbor Hospital, and MedStar Montgomery Medical Center. Residency Overview

The self-directed and flexible nature of the program has allowed residents to tailor their experience to align with their interests and achieve the following goals: 

MedStar Institute for Innovation (MI2)

  • Gain comprehensive understanding of the role, activities, and goals of MI2 and how to foster innovation across a large healthcare system 
  • Develop and apply project management skills while aiding in the implementation of key innovation initiatives and programs
  • Understand the strategy for executing innovation in a large system
  • Gain exposure to MedStar Health Corporate operations and executive leadership

MedStar Emergency Physicians (MEP)

  • Gain exposure to financial management and operations of an eight-hospital emergency medicine services group 
  • Study and support strategic initiatives related to diverse emergency departments
  • Learn and develop physician relationship management skills, and understand physician recruitment, retention, and contracting strategies
  • Improve knowledge of performance and quality improvement

Through the Johns Hopkins MHA program, MI2 and MEP have welcomed 10 residents to date, a number of whom continue to work for MedStar Health.

Recent experience: President of First Legal Depositions and President of First Legal Digital Services in Los Angeles, CA; previously served as the first Manager for Telehealth Operations and Strategy for the MedStar Telehealth Innovation Center and as Project Manager & External Alliances Specialist during her 3-year tenure with MI2
