MedStar Health and Cleveland Clinic launched the Global Healthcare Innovations Alliance together on 1/11/11 at 11:11 a.m.—a symbolic expression of the Alliance being the first of its kind. The Alliance was established to benefit patients through collaborative innovation projects, research, clinical investigation, and commercialization application. As the first joint initiative of this new alliance, Cleveland Clinic Innovations (CCI) provides on-the-ground support to assist the MedStar Institute for Innovation (MI2) in tapping into the creative talents of MedStar’s associates and manage an “idea-to-market” process.
Since its founding, CCI has earned a reputation as an industry leader in navigating the commercialization process, resulting in a multitude of spin-off companies and hundreds of licensed technologies. MedStar Health has a record of producing innovative solutions in informatics, simulation training, and elder home care, and has made a broad commitment to expand innovation into all areas of clinical care.
As its first joint initiative, the Alliance launched MedStar Inventor Services which is the operational unit responsible for advancing the best ideas of MedStar associates from concept to reality. Since the Alliance began in January 2011, MedStar Inventor Services has received several hundred invention disclosures received from MedStar associates; prior to the Alliance, MedStar Health had no internal intellectual property infrastructure. Technologies invented by MedStar associates and developed through the Alliance can be viewed here.
CCI and MI2 have since been joined by additional Alliance members, including healthcare organizations and corporate partners. Together, this network continues to explore collaboration opportunities to improve and expand its innovation efforts.
